SNMX and its partners are soon to face global boycotts on a number of fronts - including ethical, environmental (eg Friends of the Earth), regulatory and scientific.
If Mitt Romney is victorious in November, Senomyx could be confined to an Auschwitz-like museum!! (So far, Barack Obama refuses to intervene in grisly SNMX.)
The biotech company, headed by Kent Snyder, uses kidney cells (HEK293 from aborted/micarried babies to mimic the taste action of the tongue. The HEK tissue comes from aborted and miscarried babies. This leads to the controversial charge that Senomyx and staff profit from abortion. It is feared that HEK cells will find their way into perfumes, foods, soft drinks and confectionery of partnering companies. Neither Senomyx nor patners are prepared to guarantee otherwise.
Whatever way you look at it, Senomyx is a nightmare of a stock. Investors, partners, regulatory authorities and employees are dealing with human cannibalism. There are just too many uncertainties on the SNMX horizon. In fact, one wonders if Senomyx should be allowed to continue with its Nazi-type experimentation.
PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP) has already felt the ire of an introductory US-centred boycotts by some groups opposed to using kidney cells from aborted humans. This consumer action was limited to the US.
The Pepsi boycott is auspiced under the leadership of pro-lifer Debi Vinnedge of Children of God for Life. The continuation of the PEP/SNMX contract was in doubt. However, the public relations teams of Senomyx and PepsiCo have worked overtime 'soothing' the main thrust of that consumer boycott - for the present.
After all, PEP had precious little chance of walking away from its biotechnological deal. USA Today reports that Pepsi has spent st least $60 million with the Californian biotech over 4 years - and they're just the figures quoted to journalists!!
